Speculation: Translator had Death as “死亡しました”. When game developer made the death screen, the font size and bounding box was fixed, and was not wide enough for the full Japanese string, leading to the game only showing as many characters as it can, thus “死亡しまし”.

Furthermore, the font used on the Japanese text is Microsoft YaHei, the default font for Simplified Chinese version of Microsoft products.
